Dyslexia Info

Understanding dyslexia.

Clear, honest information for families, learners, and educators.

What is dyslexia

A different way of processing, not a measure of ability.

Dyslexia is a specific learning difference that primarily affects reading, writing, and spelling. It is neurological in origin, meaning it relates to how the brain processes written language, not how intelligent or hard-working a person is.

Dyslexia exists on a spectrum. Some people experience mild difficulties; others find reading and writing significantly challenging. With the right support, dyslexic learners can and do thrive.

Dyslexia affects around 1 in 10 people. It is not related to intelligence.

Common signs

What to look, or look out for.

Signs in children

  • Difficulty learning to read despite effort
  • Slow or inaccurate reading out loud
  • Spelling the same word differently in one piece of writing
  • Confusing similar-looking letters (b/d, p/q)
  • Difficulty remembering sequences (alphabet, days of the week)
  • Avoiding reading or writing tasks

Signs in adults

  • Reading slowly or needing to re-read text to understand it
  • Difficulty spelling common words
  • Struggling to take notes while listening
  • Avoiding tasks that involve a lot of reading or writing
  • Difficulty with directions, left/right confusion
  • Strong verbal ability that doesn't match written work

These signs alone don't confirm dyslexia. A formal assessment is the only way to know for certain.

Strengths

Dyslexia comes with real strengths too.

Many dyslexic thinkers excel in areas that depend on creativity, spatial reasoning, and seeing the world differently.

Creative thinking

Strong imagination and lateral problem-solving.

Big-picture thinking

Excellent at seeing patterns and connections others miss.

Practical problem-solving

Often highly capable in hands-on, real-world tasks.

Empathy & communication

Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.
